How to Create a Wi-Fi QR Code
A Wi-Fi QR code lets guests join your network without reading out or typing a long password. Here’s how to make one that works the first time.
What you need
- The network name (SSID), exactly as it appears in the Wi-Fi list.
- The password for that network.
- The security type, usually WPA2 or WPA3, which both use the WPA option.
You’ll find these on the sticker on your router, in your router’s settings page, or on an already-connected device. On many phones you can view the password of a saved network in Wi-Fi settings.
Step by step
- Open the generator. Go to the Wi-Fi QR code generator.
- Enter the network name. Match capital letters, spaces and symbols exactly. “Home WiFi” and “home wifi” are different networks.
- Choose the security type. Pick WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for almost all routers made in the last fifteen years.
- Enter the password. Special characters are handled automatically.
- Test it. Scan the preview with a phone that isn’t already connected, or temporarily “forget” the network on your phone first.
- Download and print. A PNG at 1024 px prints well up to postcard size; use SVG for larger signs.
Where to put it
- Home: inside a kitchen cupboard door or on a framed card in the guest room
- Rentals and hotels: in the welcome booklet or by the bed
- Cafés and offices: on table cards or the reception desk, ideally for a separate guest network
Anyone who scans the code can join, so keep it where only intended guests can see it. Use your router’s guest network if it has one, to keep visitors away from your own devices.
Troubleshooting
- “Unable to join network”: the password or network name is usually wrong. Check for extra spaces and capitalization.
- Nothing happens on scan: some older Android phones need Google Lens or the Wi-Fi settings scanner (Settings, Wi-Fi, then the QR icon).
- It worked before but not now: the Wi-Fi password was probably changed. Create a new code with the new password.
- Hidden network: make sure the Hidden network option is turned on, or phones may not find it.
Is it safe to make a Wi-Fi code online?
With Ziqeno, the code is assembled in your browser, and your network name and password aren’t sent to us or stored. You can check this yourself: once the page has loaded, the generator also works with your device offline.
